“We live in an age when the most basic assumptions of orthodox Christianity are being challenged. As a younger band we wrote a lot of songs aimed at pointing out problems and tearing down things that we believed were wrong. But now, at this stage in life, we’re much more interested in going back to the beginning, and using our gifts to reaffirm and shore up the foundations of the faith. We want to be a part of building up the church and preserving the culture.”
If their last record was a light-in-the-darkest-places announcement that “the end is really just the beginning,” then Downhere’s latest Centricity Music release arrives as an artfully textured but heartfelt declaration that, “True progress might mean we have to go backwards.” As students of history, Jeremy, Jason, Marc and Glenn have come to recognize and appreciate the fact that their faith is not simply their own—but that it’s part of a much larger communion of believers that stretches across cultures and thousands of years. And while we might have the privilege of bearing that torch during the short span of our own lives, they would say it’s important to recognize it’s not a torch we lit. It’s one that was passed to us by generations of faithful saints, and it’s one that we’ll soon enough be passing on to those who follow us.
At first blush that might sound like a heady concept for a pop album, but what Downhere has somehow managed to do is to translate those great truths into the most pop-friendly record they’ve engineered to date, carving out lush and hook-laden aural landscapes, complimented by a lyrical approach that feels personal and intimate. Or, to put it another way, On the Altar of Love is thoroughly passionate, but never preachy.
“Our generation is ‘cronocentristic’,” guitarist and co-lead-singer Jason Germain observes. “We’d like to think we’re on the cutting edge of discovery simply because we’re at the most recent point in history. But when it comes to truth, we’re not the new discoverers of anything; we’re just the inheritors.”
“When it was time to start writing for this record,” adds drummer Jeremy Thiessen, “we sat down and talked about ‘What if we had a clean slate? What if all the wreckage and debris of our culture were gone, and we were back down to the foundations. What would our creeds be? What would our anthems sound like? What would the practice of our faith look like?’ So that’s where we started, and we tried to write songs out of that place of pioneering a return to the core of Christianity.”
Consciously borrowing from meters and styles that hearken to an earlier time, the band also focused intentionally on crafting the sort of songs that could stand the test of time stylistically; no small challenge in the context of radio singles. With Marc Hiemermann (DC Talk, Newsboys, Jaci Velasquez) at the production helm, the feel that emerged was both immediate and timeless.
“We’ve done this long enough now that we have an unspoken chemistry,” says bassist Glenn Lavender. “We’ve defined our sound, and we’re not shy about indulging that. We’re no longer experimenting with who we are as a band. We know who we are, and we’re trying to push the boundaries of that.”
“For me it used to be all about being musically complex and artsy,” says guitarist and co-lead singer Marc Martel. “And then I had a real perspective-shifting experience. At one of our shows there was a little girl standing front-center with her mother. When I said the next song was How Many Kings her face lit up as she looked up at her mom and grabbed her hand. She sang along to every word. I thought to myself, ‘I've got to write more songs like THAT.’ Until that moment I didn't realize the effect it had on actual people and their lives. It's not our most artsy song. It’s not the most interestingly produced either. But it connects with people. That really made me rethink my songwriting priorities. Sure there's a time for exploring new soundscapes and interesting arrangements…but if the song doesn't connect with people emotionally first, then there's not much point to it. So I’m really trying to stay in that magic equilibrium now as I write, that place that has some interesting artistry, but combines it with a strong emotional human connection too.”
On the Altar of Love is perhaps at its most vulnerable and human on the anthemic and plaintive Let Me Rediscover You. In fact, if songs had a physical posture, Let Me Rediscover You would probably be on its knees with its arms uplifted. The urgency of the vocals sweeps the melody along forcefully, undergirded by the song’s hymn-like and punctuated rhythm.
“Sometimes we think we’ve given all we can,” Jeremy says, “and then love asks us for more. The only proper response to the love we’ve been given in Christ is to abandon ourselves completely to his love, whatever that might mean. Let Me Rediscover You is really a heart cry, a prayer that our hearts and minds and souls would be turned back afresh to the knowledge and experience of who God is. That has to be our beginning, and our ending point.”
Other standout songs on the project include the moody, rootsy, spinning-wheel-feel of the title track, the powerful minimalism of Reveal The Kingdom (an “anthem for an eternal kingdom”), and the accessibly poignant poetry of Thank You For the Heartbreak—a song that not only recognizes but sincerely celebrates God’s sovereignty at work even within our hurt and sorrow.
“On the Altar of Love is really a proclamation of faith,” explains Jason. “It’s an encouragement to continue on regardless of circumstance, to continue this journey with joy and celebration, because we have a promise. We know where the journey ends. And we know that we’re not alone as we make our way. We have the companionship of Christ, and we have this vast family of brothers and sisters, and we have this great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us, who are cheering us on. So we want to cast aside the distractions, return to what is essential, and spend ourselves completely in response to the love we’ve been given.”

7/17/2012 - Downhere To End Music Ministry In January 2013 With Final Fall Tour
As the old saying goes….all good things must come to an end. It was announced today by Downhere that the band will end their music ministry in January 2013 with a final tour this fall. Dates will be announced in the near future.
Statement from Downhere: Hello friends, It is with many memories and deep feelings that we relay to you the decision we have made over the course of the last year. January 1, 2013 will mark the end of our traveling ministry for the foreseeable future. It has become very clear to us that this chapter of our journey, initiated by God, is drawing to a close. While we mourn the end of this season we also celebrate over a decade of ministry. It has been hard work and our families have paid a big price. The friends, songs, experiences, and lives changed as a result of hearing the truth of God's love has sustained us through many years and miles. For those of you who know us well you know that this is not a band breakup. In fact, we are open to playing a select few shows or events in the future. After many years and miles spent together we have become a band of brothers who love each other dearly. There is not one single variable that has initiated this change; rather it would seem the same sovereign hand that has guided us together for this season is now leading us in different directions. We are grateful for the role everyone has played in our lives. Your encouragement and support over the years has carried us through thick and thin. We have always wanted to finish well. We believe that means finishing together, as a band... and that is what we are going to do. We are working on setting up a few wrap-up shows this fall. More information will be forthcoming as things get solidified. Sincerely, Jason, Marc, Glenn, & Jeremy Downhere’s final album for Centricity Music is their current project On The Altar Of Love, received rave reviews withTheFish.com saying,, Plain and simple, this is a band that knows how to write to its strengths and play its songs to the hilt, and this is an album worth acclaim. Downhere has enjoyed great chart success over the years as “Here I Am” and “Hope Is Rising” peaked at #5 and #17 on the AC charts, while “My Last Amen” peaked at #5 on the CHR charts. All of the songs are from Downhere’s previous project Ending Is Beginning that media heralded as their strongest studio album at that time. Downhere released their first Christmas project in 2009, based on the enormous success of “How Many Kings” that peaked at #4 on the charts. Also during their illustrious twelve-year career, Downhere has garnered 13 Covenant Awards, 4 Juno Awards and a Dove Award for Modern Rock Recorded Song of the Year. The group’s most recent Covenant awards were for Song of the Year (Let Me Rediscover You) and Pop/ Contemporary Album of the Year (Two At A Time). Two At A Time was released in the summer of 2010 and had two new songs plus B-sides, including the single, “You’re Not Alone.” For more information on Downhere’s upcoming fall tour please visit their website, www.downhere.com <http://www.downhere.com/> or www.myspace.com/downhere <http://www.myspace.com/downhere> .

1/27/2012 - Downhere, Aaron Shust, and Jason Gray Head Out On Spring Leg of The Called To Love Tour
Due to the strong support of The Called To Love Tour last fall, a spring leg of the tour has been announced and will once again feature Centricity Music artists, Downhere, Aaron Shust and Jason Gray. The Called To Love Tour will run through March 15 - May 12, and will be sponsored by World Vision. Last year’s tour was a hit with audiences and brought powerful and fun-loving nights of ministry across the country.
“Jason Gray, Aaron Shust, and Downhere brought the house down at the Paramount Theater in Abilene, TX,” says promoter, Ken L. Fincher. “Their show was amazing and is still being talked about some 3 months later! These guys are gracious, inspiring, humble yet very engaging and entertaining. From the opening first song to the finale, audience members were on their feet, hands raised high, singing along to each song. It was truly a blessed evening.”
“We love these guys!,” exclaims promoters David & Susie Hartness of the Wilmington, NC date. “Not only are they very gifted musicians and songwriters, but they are such genuine and humble men who share God's love through word and song. We've hosted several of these artists more than one time, and they always exceed our expectations. If the spring leg of The Called To Love Tour comes anywhere near you please don’t miss it!”
All three participating artists will continue to showcase the great successes from their 2011 projects. Aaron Shust has achieved a record-breaking twelve-week run in the #1 spot on the AC Monitor chart with his hit single, My Hope is In You. The tune was also the Top 20 song of 2011 on Billboard’s year-end chart and recently was the #1 downloaded song on iTunes. The single is from Aaron’s CD, This Is What We Believe. Downhere’s song, Rest is #26 on the AC Indicator chart, and it’s from their critically acclaimed CD, On The Altar Of Love. Among the rave reviews for the album is JesusFreakHideout.com who exclaims…….one of the best releases of the year and earns Downhere another “A” on their report card.
Jason Gray’s single, Remind Who I Am was #15 for nine weeks on the AC Monitor chart, currently #8 on AC Indicator, has entered the CHR chart, is KLOVE’s #1 song, and was iTunes #1 downloaded song. The single is from Gray’s current CD, A Way To See In The Dark that was voted the #1 Album of the Year by the music website, Sound Opinion.

12/8/2011 - Downhere's Marc Martel Wins Spot in Queen Extravaganza
Four decades later, the music of Queen hasn’t just survived, it’s thrived. The band, who recently received the “Global Icon Award” at the MTV European Music Awards, has sold more than 300 million albums, 16 of which were No. 1 chart-toppers. They’ve written and recorded 18 No. 1 singles, played over 700 live concerts in every part of the world, have amassed a planet-wide fanbase whose members number in the hundreds of millions, and remain one of the most influential groups of all time. And to hear Queen drummer Roger Taylor tell it, they’re just getting started. The last thing they are doing is standing still.
2012 will see the launch of “The Queen Extravaganza Tour,” a grand touring production booked by powerhouse agency CAA that will celebrate the music of Queen. Coming on board to ensure the touring show will match the design and excitement of Queen at its best will be such rock tour heavyweights as stage designer Mark Fisher (U2, AC/DC, Muse, The Rolling Stones, Cirque de Soleil) and lighting designer Rob Sinclair (Adele, Vampire Weekend, Goldfrapp, Peter Gabriel).
Taylor will oversee this royal road show, taking the role of producer and music director, with Brian May involved later in the production, but Taylor’s most important role, however, was leading the judges, Spike Edney (Queen’s keyboard player since the mid 80’s and Trip Khalaf (Queen’s eternal sound engineer) in hand picking the musicians that will be featured on the tour. And after 11 weeks of reviewing online auditions and weighing votes from Queen fans around the world, Taylor is ready to announce the line-up.
“As the audition videos began posting, we could see right away that the caliber of talent was very high,” says Taylor. “But when I got into the studio with the final 25 musicians, I realized that these guys are seriously good players. They went way beyond my expectations. It was an incredibly difficult decision to choose the final line-up. I wish I could've kept them all, but in the end, I'm very happy with this group of exceptional musicians."
“The Queen Extravaganza” band line-up will be:
VOCALISTS
Jennifer Espinoza
Marc Martel
GUITARISTS
Tristan Avakian
Brian Gresh
DRUMS
Tyler Warren
BASS
Francois-Olivier Doyon
“What an amazing and unexpected opportunity to come our way – not to mention the timing of it all for me,” said Marc Martel, whose audition video for “Somebody to Love” earned him an MTV O Award and an appearance on the Ellen Degeneres Show. “Having gotten to know the other contest winners a bit in LA, I’m confident we have what it takes to gel as a unit and give our best to do justice to some of the best rock music ever recorded. I am so thankful for the chance to do this. Gonna be Fun!”

11/10/2011 - Downhere Wins Two Covenant Awards
Centricity Music’s high-profile band, Downhere, won two major categories during the recent GMA Covenant Awards in Canada. The group won Song of the Year (Let Me Rediscover You) and Pop/ Contemporary Album of the Year (Two At A Time). Two At a Time was released in the summer of 2010 and had two new songs plus B-sides and demos in order to satisfy the high demand for new Downhere music between albums. Downhere’s current project, On The Altar Of Love, released in late August and as a result didn’t qualify for this year’s awards.
“It is such a thrill when artists we have been developing and working with get the recognition they deserve,” states Steve Ford, VP of Marketing, Centricity Music. “To have Downhere continue to garner the accolades from their Canadian fans is overwhelming. “
Downhere continues to generate tremendous reviews for their projects, with JesusFreakHideout.com calling On The Altar Of Love “one of the best releases of the year.” The band is currently on The Called To Love Tour with labelmates, Jason Gray and Aaron Shust that ends November 13th in North Carolina. Downhere will launch their highly anticipated How Many Kings Christmas tour on December 1st in Overland Park, KS. At the same time, co-lead singer, Marc Martel, has become a music sensation with his Queen Extravaganza video audition that generated more than 4-million hits. It led to an appearance on the Ellen Show, winning the MTV O Awards 2011 for Best Fan Cover and Queen drummer, Roger Taylor, announcing in a FOX News interview that Martel “is an extraordinarily good singer.” The fan voting process begins November 14th at www.queenextravaganza.com <http://www.queenextravaganza.com> and concludes November 25th. Winners for the Queen Extravaganza Live Tour will be announced in December.
