Chances are that you know the Carlos Whittaker story. You know about his time at Andy Stanley’s North Point community church, about that tattoo, that viral video and the People’s Choice Award. You know all about that blog which comes in just behind Piper and Driscoll in the top five charts and you’ll know about the debut album with Integrity Music. We’re guessing you’ll also know about the fact that for Carlos Whittaker, the prospect of a world without social media is, frankly, terrifying.
But that is neither the whole story or the bigger picture. And when it comes to the words and sounds of Carlos Whittaker, the whole story and bigger picture matter a lot.
In a journey that has taken him from the east coast to the deep south, Carlos has become something unique within the church. His favorite phrase is his calling card - to disturb and disrupt to see Christ’s face fresh again - and his voice sounds loud and clear.
“Perhaps my voice before was a little more cautious,” he explains. “But now that I’m not working in a church I can be more...” [pause] “...aggressive? I mean that I am better able to question the evangelical community. These days I can say the things that will get me into trouble and lose readers and commenters, but these are the things that matter - these are the things that are true.”
All of which is why we’re five paragraphs in to this micro-bio and we’re only just getting round to exploring the new music coming from Carlos Whittaker. So where to start? The debut album - Ragamuffin Soul - was produced and largely co-written with producer-of- the-moment Jason Ingram. There was a lot of ground to be covered - like finding a sound, a voice and honing a message. And it needed to happen fast.
The result was an album that Carlos poured his heart into and songs like God of Second Chances that have pierced people straight to the heart. Carlos watched that song as well as many others take off almost as virally as his online presence. It was a fantastic beginning to this journey.
But two years are a long time in the life of a social-mediarista like Carlos, and in between the then and the now he has joined the Paradigm Collective label family - home to the likes All The Bright Lights and The Royal Royal - a brother partnership featuring Nathan ‘Producer-Of-A-Moment-Coming-Very-Soon’ Finochio.
“Nathan and I became friends before we became music partners. My kids love him and he knows me as a father, as a husband and as a friend. He sees my successes and my failures. So when we work together he produces and crafts in a whole different way. He gets my heartbeat.”
That heartbeat has a fresh sound. In The Arms features no heavily-delayed guitar parts, but a double swiss of keys, loops and all the rest (although, to be fair, in a concession to bemused guitar players everywhere, Carlos has recorded acoustic versions of all the songs). Still, there’s a reason for the change:
“People see me as this creative guy, and I don’t want to give them cookie-cutter worship music out of Nashville.”
The lyrics are equally deliberate, equally disarming, equally raw:
I used to have panic attacks so strong that I was unable to stand up. So these songs come from a life that has had to practice total dependence on God. Maybe the brokenness levels are higher than in others, but I’m tired of the fear. I’m tired of getting emails every day from people saying ‘you said what I wanted to say’...”
So these songs have an agenda, like a sheepdog let loose in the field. What might seem like chaos and collision is something else entirely: a Spirit-scripted plan to drive us to the place where the fear loses its grip. That’s where they’ll leave us; right over there In The Arms of God.

4/1/2010 - Carlos Whittaker's Adventures in Parenting Land Family on CBS' The Early Show
MOBILE, Ala.—When Integrity Music singer/songwriter and worship leader Carlos Whittaker posted a clip of his children’s back-seat sing-along to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)”—and the now-infamous incident that followed—on his www.ragamuffinsoul.com blog earlier this week, little did he know the priceless moment would grab the attention of CBS’ “The Early Show,” NBC’s “TODAY" and AOL, among other national outlets.
Carlos, his wife Heather, and children Sohaila, Seanna and Losiah, were interviewed from their Atlanta home this morning on CBS’ “The Early Show,” discussing the headline-grabbing incident, which can be viewed at www.ragamuffinsoul.com.
The video was also featured this morning on NBC’s “TODAY" show and the clip is slated to air on tonight’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on ABC. In addition, AOL’s ParentDish.com featured the video, along with an interview with Whittaker, yesterday: http://www.parentdish.com/2010/03/31/little-boy-weeps-when-told-hes-not-a-single-lady-but-dad-saves/
The viral video sensation is shedding new light on a subject dear to Whittaker’s heart: adoption. The Whittakers’ 4-year-old son, Losiah, who is featured in the clip, was adopted from South Korea in 2006, and the family has been given a new platform to encourage others to consider adoption.
Whittaker’s Integrity Music debut, Ragamuffin Soul, releases April 27. The project’s forthcoming single, “God of Second Chances,” penned by Whittaker, Jason Ingram and Phillip LaRue, was partially inspired by Losiah’s adoption. Carlos Whittaker’s blog, www.ragamuffinsoul.com, has a worldwide following of more than 20,000 people.

10/23/2009 - Integrity Music Signs Worship Artist and RagumuffinSoul.com Blogger Carlos Whittaker
MOBILE, Alabama (October 23, 2009) – Carlos Whittaker has described himself in many ways: worshipper, pastor, thinker, experience architect, Web 2.0 junkie. Now, he adds recording artist to his life story after being signed to the Integrity Music Label.
Integrity Music plans to introduce Whittaker, who has been a worship leader for more than a decade, through a digital EP scheduled for release in early 2010 with a full album slated to release later in the year.
Whittaker’s day job since 2007 has been as worship leader for Buckhead Church, a satellite campus of Atlanta’s North Point Church, one of the biggest and fastest growing churches in America led by Rev. Andy Stanley. He sits on the creative sermon planning team for Andy Stanley and is one of the key planners and teachers for the Catalyst Conference for more than 12,000 worship leaders and team members held in Atlanta this month. He has also advised on programming for the Saddleback Conference and other churches and events in the U.S.
Whittaker has earned a reputation as one of the most transparent and authentic worship leaders in the Church. With more than 20,000 followers on his RagamuffinSoul.com blog and Twitter, Whittaker has harnessed the power of technology and social media to build and nurture community. His fondness for knocking down Christian stereotypes was on full display in his appearance on The Learning Channel’s popular reality show “L.A. Ink,” during which Whittaker commissioned a tattoo of Saul’s conversion for his entire right arm.
“Unquestionably, Carlos has the ability to become one of the most respected and relevant voices in the every-changing landscape of worship music,” said Jay King, Vice President of Artist Development/A&R for Integrity. “Along with leading worship at one of the biggest churches in the United States, Carlos is a born communicator and his unique and uninhibited style connects with a broad audience whether he’s leading from the platform of a church or writing for a constantly growing blog community, all of whom are eagerly awaiting his first worship record.”
Whittaker, who counts Keith Green, Rich Mullins, Hillsong and Jack Johnson among his music influences, is working with Jason Ingram, who will produce his debut recordings. He is also co-writing with Mia Fieldes and Philip LaRue.
“My life goal is to inspire a movement of authenticity among all generations of Christians that morphs the face of the evangelical church into a place of being real with yourself, others, and God,” says Whittaker.
Whittaker and his wife Heather Whittaker make up a blogging power couple in Ragamuffinsoul.com and Whittakerwoman.typepad.com. They have 3 children - - Seanna and Sohalia and son Losiah, adopted from Seoul, Korea in 2006.
