QUINN PATTERSON (39), a pilot instructor at the Air force academy, and SAMANTHA (SAM) (37), a free-spirited musician, are an unlikely couple. Quinn is strong and honorable and lives by the book. He couldn’t be more different than his wife Sam, but he would do anything for her. Sam loves to live outside the box. She’s always looking for adventure and her brave—if sometimes reckless—approach to life pushes Quinn’s boundaries. Although different in many ways, they agree on one thing: falling in love is easy, staying in love is hard. Having both come from divorced families, they vow to protect their love at all cost. They also have a plan; they'll do whatever it takes to stay in love and come up with all kinds of crazy new ways to connect. They fight hard to keep complications out—which includes deciding not to have children—because Sam thinks it’s safer to keep it simple, just the two of them. Then one day they receive shocking news that turns their world upside down. Sam’s childhood best friend Tezzie and her husband have been killed while working with the Peace Corps in Africa. Their six children, adopted from around the world, have been left in the care of their godparents: the shocked and totally unprepared Sam and Quinn.
