Redman has been credited with helping to spark the modern worship movement. Over the past decade, his songs have become familiar anthems of churches across the globe. In fact seven of Redman’s songs currently appear on the Top 200 CCLI chart, including such well-known classics as “The Heart of Worship,” “Better Is One Day” and “Let Everything That Has Breath.”

Redman’s latest album is entitled Blessed Be Your Name: Songs of Matt Redman Vol. 1. The 12-track anthology features some of his most popular songs to date. The album’s title track, “Blessed Be Your Name,” earned Redman his first Dove Award this year for Worship Song of the Year, an honor he takes in stride.

“It's all a journey,” Redman admits. “The Dove Award environment was pretty full-on for a little English lad like me. But I walked away feeling encouraged. I'm blessed enough to have a strong sense of what I think I'm called to do. But it's even more lovely to be encouraged and affirmed in that by others.”

Recorded in 2004 by modern worship band Tree63, “Blessed Be Your Name” became one of the most played songs on Christian radio for the year. It was eventually named Billboard’s No. 1 Adult Contemporary Christian radio single for 2004. It’s just one of many Redman-penned songs that have been recorded by artists such as Michael W. Smith, Delirious?, Rebecca St. James, Kutless, the Passion artists and many more.

“It's a massive privilege,” says Redman, “but that's what the songs are for. First and foremost they're my expression to God, and secondly I hope they'll help my church family engage with God in worship. I try and write passionately, but in terms that are general enough for people to attach their own stories to.”

It is that generous spirit that no doubt garners Redman the respect and admiration of fellow songwriters and worship leaders everywhere. His commitment to his craft and his calling has allowed him to become an inspiration and mentor as he speaks and performs in front of thousands at conferences, music festivals and worship gatherings around the world.

“I feel scared of presuming to be a teacher,” Redman admits. “But I do feel we need more than just songs out there to convey what worship is and isn't. It's so vital in these days that we worship with understanding. One of the biggest things of all is our theology, our view of God. We've written so many songs that, combined together, have somehow painted a tiny picture of who God is. I'm desperate now for myself and thousands of others to aspire to write songs that will reach a little higher – painting a bigger and more glorious picture of the God we're responding to.”

Redman recently filmed a TV special for the BBC at London’s famed Abbey Road Studios, and is heading out on the road this fall on the Indescribable Tour with sixstepsrecords labelmate/worship artist Chris Tomlin and speaker/author Louie Giglio.
