Superchick is living up to its name. Its first four albums have combined for 700,000 copies sold, more than 70 film, television and videogame song placements, and five No. 1 singles. But for a band inspired to empower its listeners, its new album does more than walk the talk… it rocks the talk!
“We’ve always encouraged people to go nuts with their gifts and abilities, but on this album we personally did that ourselves,” says Matt of the band’s latest sonic stunner, Rock What You Got. “There was an instance where Dave did a 100 different guitar takes of one riff ‘til his fingers bled, and Tricia kept singing until her voice gave out. On this album we just went for it!”
Rock What You Got infuses a “rock-o-tronic” sound – an electropunk mash-up of slashing guitars, pulsing keyboards and grit-pop vocals – with enough innovative production to make Tony Stark jealous. In music and message, it’s the “Last One Picked” hitting a Sid Crosby slapshot; it’s “Beauty From Pain” tears turning a beast into a prince; it’s “Karaoke Superstars” turning Average Daves into American idols. It’s the musical realization that you can’t just believe in your gifts; you need to rock ‘em.
“I told the band, ‘Everything we do, I want it to be more,’” says Max, who also produced. “If we are going to be rock, let’s be more rock. If we are going to be punk, let’s be more punk. If we are going to touch metal, let’s really do metal. I just wanted to fire all the barrels.”
In fact, the album is loaded enough for three lead singles at different radio formats. The CHR power ballad “Hold” offers a cloud of pianos, violins and electric guitars over which the girls cry out, “I need a hand to hold, to hold me from the edge.” The stirring AC confessional “Crawl (Carry Me Through)” takes a softer yet no less dramatic approach in its prayer for strength, and “Hey Hey” is a rock rallying call with fiery guitar chords, defiant attitude and female gang vocals that challenge, “Why kiss the feet of the people who kick you?”
“It stands true to your traditional Superchick,” says Melissa. “We all stand together, embrace our beauty, encourage each other and feel good about it.”
In making Rock What You Got, Superchick found the best way to rock its own gifts was a return to the indie mindset of its debut. Max explains, “We made our first album without any outside interference so we could try and do whatever we wanted, and that record is fairly creative for that reason. This time around, instead of trying to guess what the market would want, we went back to where we started and did whatever we wanted to do on Rock What You Got.”
One such example – as heard on upbeat rockers like “So Beautiful,” “Cross the Line,” “Alive” and “Rock What You Got” – was demonstrating the girls’ affinity for the Sarah Connor-Ellen Ripley era. “Back in the ‘80s, women were more about empowerment and being strong, and they didn’t have to fit into the mold of just being sex symbols,” says Tricia. “Vocally, we went more in that direction: rawer and pushing out the range, yet still carrying what we are.”
Rock What You Got also features the hard-to-find radio version of “Stand in the Rain,” which spent a record 13 straight weeks at No. 1, and the old school, Eddie Van Halen-channeling “Dave Ghazarian: Guitar Hero.”
Adding to the album’s edge, Superchick wrote the new songs against a backdrop of personal hardship. In the past few years, band members faced painful relationship splits and cancer touched four of their families.
Still, while the last album sought to empathize with listener pain, Rock What You Got is the battle cry to charge forward.
“This album is about empowerment and hope,” says Matt. “Don’t be afraid to cross the lines that people put up to limit you when you know you are better than that.”
Or as Max puts it, “This album calls on people to wake up and find their destiny.”
Rock What You Got’s message reminds people that Einstein didn’t withdraw when his headmaster said he’d “never amount to much,” and Beethoven didn’t give up when his music teacher called him “hopeless.” These people didn’t just believe in their gifts, they rocked them out!
If Karaoke Superstars introduced the idea of a “One Girl Revolution,” it’s Rock What You Got that proclaims, “The revolution starts when you cross the line.”

9/1/2009 - Superchick Partners with International "Operation Beautiful" Campaign
Grammy nominated pop-rock band Superchick has joined efforts with “Operation Beautiful,” an international campaign that encourages women to love themselves just the way they are. Superchick’s song “So Beautiful” has been tapped as an anthem for the movement, which the band will support on tour this fall.
Launched in June 2009 by food and fitness blogger Caitlin Boyle, Operation Beautiful encourages women to post encouraging notes in public places, take pictures of those notes and share them online. The campaign’s official web site, OperationBeautiful.com, is rapidly becoming an Internet phenomenon, with more than 350 notes posted last month alone. Women from the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, Guam, Iraq, New Zealand and other countries are posting notes in public restrooms, on boxes of supermarket diet shakes, in subway stations and in fitness center changing rooms with phrases like “You are perfect just the way you are!” and “Why wait? Start loving yourself now!”
Sisters Tricia and Melissa Brock of Superchick recently discovered the web site and have committed to posting their own notes as they travel across the country on the BarlowGirl-Superchick Live Tour this fall. They are also encouraging their fans to join the movement and post notes of their own to help spread love and confidence to women everywhere.
“A few weeks ago, we came across OperationBeautiful.com and fell in love with its mission to encourage confidence in girls and women of all shapes and sizes,” says Tricia Brock. “Not enough girls look in the mirror and see what's beautiful and different about themselves! Spreading messages of positive self-esteem and self-image has been Superchick’s passion for the past ten years that we’ve been writing and touring. Needless to say, we were excited to come across this growing underground movement and honored to be a small part of it.”
“Superchick's record label contacted me earlier this month, saying they had the perfect song for Operation Beautiful,” says Boyle. “The song was ‘So Beautiful,’ and the first time I listened to it all I could think was 'This is the rock anthem for Operation Beautiful!’ I want women to realize that they are beautiful – and I don’t mean physically beautiful. Every one of us has an inner light that shines through and makes us unique. We need to accept and embrace the way we are instead of trying to reach an unattainable ideal. Our daughters will thank us for it!”

6/10/2009 - Superchick Helps to "Make a Wish" Come True for One Special Fan
Superchick surprised young fan Stephanie Vorm, who suffers from aplastic anemia, at the Nashville Zoo on Saturday, May 30. The band met with Stephanie and her family for a day of fun arranged by the "Make-A-Wish Foundation," an organization that helps grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions. The eight-year-old's dream was to spend a day with her favorite band, Superchick, whose music played a significant role in getting her through the initial diagnosis and treatment of her illness. Additionally, Superchick was honored to join Stephanie's wish granters, Tracy Bossman and Susie Remelius, in presenting Stephanie with the news that her Wish: To Go to Hawaii to Swim with the Dolphins would soon be a reality. “It was humbling to be part of someone's wish, and our day with the family was so special for us," says Superchick's Tricia Brock. "It's encouraging to know that there are organizations like Make-A-Wish Foundation making a difference in the world one person at a time. Thanks to Make-A-Wish Foundation for involving us - it was a day we won't soon forget.”

3/31/2009 - Superchick Rallies Fans for "Hey! Hey! (That's Freedom You Hear)" Tour
Superchick heads out early next month on its spring 2009 “Hey! Hey! (That’s Freedom You Hear)” tour, visiting nine states through early May. Accompanying the group will be celebrated “Revolve” tour speaker Rachel Hockett and Essential Records sister duo, Tal & Acacia.
Kicking off Friday, April 3, at Roncalli Auditorium in Manitowoc, Wis., the tour, whose tagline is “a one night event about life above the noise,” is packaged as a conference-style event with the message that there is one voice that leads to freedom. Through sharing, audience interaction, and Superchick’s high-energy live performance, the tour captures the dynamic of a large out-of-town conference in a hometown event.
“It’s not going to be just another concert. Our vision is to remind those who attend of the ways we let the world around us get so noisy that we cannot hear God’s voice,” says Superchick’s Tricia Baumhardt. “We are so excited to tour with another great sister group, Tal & Acacia, and wonderful speaker Rachel Hockett. Come be encouraged to go home and turn it all down so that you may hear again the one voice that really matters.”
Chicago-based Superchick comprises sisters Tricia Brock (vocals) and Melissa Brock (vocals, guitar), Matt Dally (bass, vocals), Dave Ghazarian (lead guitar, vocals), and Max Hsu (keyboards/DJ). With five projects to date, Superchick has sold upwards of 700,000 albums, and the group’s songs have been heard in more than 70 film, television and video games. The band’s latest release, Rock What You Got, provides no exception, turning out Superchick’s highest ever first week sales numbers and receiving significant licensing placements on MTV’s “The Hills,” ABC television spots for “True Beauty,” and the Style Network’s new reality series “Running In Heels.” The disc additionally received a 2009 GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album and produced the Top 5 radio hit, “Hold.” The album’s second single, “Cross The Line” is currently being played at the CHR and Christian Rock radio formats. For more information, visit http://www.superchickonline.com/.
Rachel Hockett has spent the past three years as a praise and worship singer as well as featured speaker on the Women of Faith “Revolve” tour, reaching more than nine thousand girls at each event. Currently, Rachel’s mind is consumed with ways to share her message of hope, freedom, and honesty. She believes she is a communicator of the truth to all people, which is why she constantly, and passionately, pursues ways to participate in films, projects, and any opportunities that allow her to promote the beauty of the truth.
The duo—sisters Tal & Acacia—grew up in Portland, Maine, and first began songwriting and playing guitar in their teen years, while the family spent an insightful year in Russia aiding a humanitarian orphan ministry. Now, in their early twenties, Tal & Acacia aim to create songs that wake listeners and refresh the soul “like a cold splash of water for those who hear it.” Especially in desert times, the songwriting duo’s music ministers and inspires. Musically, Tal & Acacia bear resemblance to such acts as Feist, Norah Jones, Imogen Heap and Sixpence None The Richer, and credit songwriting inspiration from artists like Keith Green and Stevie Wonder. Releasing July 14, the quirky pop sound of Tal & Acacia’s debut album, titled Wake Me, is a breath of fresh air—defined by catchy choruses—and girded in joy. Produced by Monroe Jones (Ginny Owens, Chris Rice, Third Day, Caedmon’s Call), Tal & Acacia’s Wake Me is distinctly rich and infectious, and intuitively embraces the clash between the principled, spiritual inner self and a confusing, glittery outer culture.
