Flyleaf bleed, grow, love and live on MEMENTO MORI.
A focused fire burns bright at the heart of Flyleaf's second full-length album. The platinum-selling Texas quintet's latest offering is a collection of poignant, passionate and pensive hard rock songs. From the kinetic first single, "Again," to the touching album closer, "Arise," guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartman trade orchestral riffs that seesaw from soaring to searing. Drummer James Culpepper smoothly propels every groove forward, while Pat Seals' bass anchors unforgettable hooks. Gliding across this majestic melodic backdrop, Lacey’s vocals build into beauty from pain. Her voice reaches transcendent heights on songs like "Set Apart This Dream" and "Missing.” Flyleaf's flame keeps rising…
Lacey describes MEMENTO MORI best. "This album feels like an emotional rollercoaster. While listening to it, I was holding my breath at points. The issues definitely got heavier and a little more intense."
For Flyleaf, it's all part of growing up. In October 2008, the band entered a Los Angeles studio with producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, All-American Rejects) to record the follow-up to their self-titled debut. Immediately, these five individuals tapped into the same chemistry that made FLYLEAF a massive worldwide hit and yielded songs like the breakout single "I'm So Sick" in 2005.
"As songwriters, we all have such a great rapport. None of us are really possessive or territorial about what we write," explains Pat. "There are a lot of different flavors that work perfectly together. We grew up a lot since the first record, and I think that particularly shows in the selflessness that each of us now brings to Flyleaf. We're vastly different people, but we’re united in what we want to say and how we want to say it."
That unity shines on songs like "Beautiful Bride," which just poured out of the band one day in rehearsal. The track came together instantly, and Lacey was able to write lyrics on the spot. She says, "Pat started playing this new song, and the words came out all at once. I'd been dealing with a conflict in my family and this song was born out of that moment. I got a phone call the next day that an amazing reconciliation had come within my family. Both the song and the situation started out painful and ended up glorious. This just proves to me how everything can work together for a greater good. Like a family fight turning into 'Beautiful Bride', a song about unity."
The record is made of messages like that. Flyleaf titled the album MEMENTO MORI—a Latin phrase meaning "Be mindful of death"—in order to remind the world how precious life is. The band tries to take advantage of each and every opportunity presented to them, and they're an example of dreams coming to fruition through never giving up. For Sameer, that sentiment of living every day to its fullest is essential for creating music. "Each day is a new beginning. It's never too late to become the kind of superhero you imagined you'd be when you were a kid."
These sonic superheroes have created an experience for listeners, stretching far beyond the recorded sounds. Flyleaf looked over the 13 songs that would become MEMENTO MORI, and saw how they all come together to form a sort of parable if you listen from start to finish. Lacey evinces, "Every track is like another chapter of the story. In my head it feels like a movie. The story becomes a parable for important life lessons we’ve learned over the years. After coming through these life and death experiences, we have learned to be more grateful and purposeful with the time we are given. We want to pass the torch at the end during ‘Arise.’ Perhaps someone will come away from the story and be more grateful and purposeful with their own life and the world will change for the better."
Flyleaf began composing these stories as they toured the world on the 2006 and 2007 installments of the Family Values Tour and on a European trek with Korn. Sharing the stage with the likes of Stone Sour, Deftones and Evanescence, Flyleaf captivated fans everywhere as their self-titled debut continued to ascend the charts. Singles such as "I'm So Sick," "Fully Alive," and the RIAA gold smash "All Around Me" pulled audiences in, and FLYLEAF reached RIAA platinum heights while the band toured endlessly. The album spent 133 weeks on the Billboard 200 while staking claims in the top 5 of the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart and the top 15 of the Billboard Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts.
In 2006, Flyleaf released MUSIC AS A WEAPON, a four-track EP; its sale supported the work of World Vision. Last year, the band contributed their rendition of "What's This?" to the star-filled compilation NIGHTMARE REVISITED, a rock homage to the music of director Tim Burton's now classic 1993 film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. The following year the band treated fans to a special, limited edition, two-disc version of FLYLEAF.
Now the world will receive MEMENTO MORI, and it's Flyleaf's greatest gift. Right before they put the finishing touches on the album, they embarked on an acoustic tour for U.S. troops overseas in Afghanistan, debuting two songs, "Circle" and "Chasm." The band's itinerary took them from Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan—where they performed before nearly 1,000 soldiers—to the distant Forward Operating Base Baylough in southern Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border.
Lacey explains. "It was the last thing we did before we finished this record. It was really life changing for us. Everywhere you turn in Afghanistan, you're reminded of your mortality—in a good way. These troops were so thankful that we were there and that they could just enjoy life for a minute. That's exactly what MEMENTO MORI means. Life's important, and it's brief. You never know when it's going to be over for you or the people around you. You have to make the most of every opportunity you're given. We got to talk to the soldiers about so many things, but there was a bomb the next day and many of them were killed. We came to know these men personally in a short time though. That was MEMENTO MORI at its highest."
"Missing" is another song that shows how important love and life are. The hook is massive, but there's more to it. Lacey continues, "The bridge says "Down here love wasn't meant to be for me, all is vanity underneath the sun." The phrase makes you ask 'What would the world be like if we took love out of it?' Love is painful. It requires work. It's selfless. Even though it's difficult, if you take that out of the earth you're going to end up with nothing. C.S. Lewis said, 'The only place in all of the world where you can escape the dangers of love is hell.'" Nothing could be truer.
On the other end of the emotional spectrum, Lacey drew inspiration for her vocal performance for "Set Apart this Dream" and "Tiny Heart" from her relationship with her younger sister. She says, "My sister is 17, and she's about to become a woman. She's always looked up to me. As much as I can, I want to make sure she doesn't make the same mistakes I have. She listens to me. This record has stories about failing and consequences of wrong decisions. My songs are usually hopeful in a really dark way. Many times artists can communicate deep feelings for other people and it heals them. That's what art does."
That's also what Flyleaf does. In the end, this band is about giving. "This band's formation was one of the most natural things I’d ever experienced and I knew it would change our lives” says Sameer.
However, it's evolved into something even larger. Lacey concludes, "I want to let kids know that they have a purpose and can do something great. I believe that one hundred percent. Growing up, my mom was a single mom with six kids. We struggled for absolutely everything. Here we are now with so many blessings. It doesn't even feel real sometimes. I just feel so thankful."
That's why MEMENTO MORI is going to last in the hearts and minds for listeners for a long time.

5/11/2010 - Flyleaf to Headline Unite & Fight US Tour
In continued support of their highly successful album Memento Mori, platinum-selling rock quintet FLYLEAF will hit the road for the UNITE & FIGHT tour, set to kick off May 4th in Albuquerque, NM. The Texas rock group will bring their undeniably uplifting live show to audiences in every corner of the country throughout the headlining run. They will be supported by alternative mainstays 10 Years and progressive rockers Fair to Midland.
Flyleaf's lead singer Lacey shed some light on the name of the tour, and the message it carries for the band: "The charge "Unite and Fight!" is a lyric from the opening song "Beautiful Bride" on our latest record, Memento Mori. It is time to fight for unity because so many divisions are wreaking havoc on our broken hearts. Whether it's in relationships between family, friends or the unknown passerby, peace can sometimes be a battle that needs to be fought. "
Since the release of their acclaimed sophomore offering Memento Mori (A&M/Octone) in October, the band has been touring relentlessly and showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to standout cuts from the latest offering - "Again" and current single "Missing" - audiences on the upcoming tour will be treated to live favorites such as "Fully Alive," "All Around Me" and the band's breakout single "I'm So Sick."
Flyleaf will also share their unforgettable live show with their international fans at this year's Download Festival at Castle Donnington in the UK. On June 12th, Flyleaf will share the prestigious main stage with legendary acts including Rage Against the Machine, Deftones, Megadeth and many others. Their international travels will also see Flyleaf perform at the Muz TV awards on July 11th in Moscow-a major honor that puts the band in the company of previous performers Katy Perry, Sum 41, 30 Seconds to Mars and Christina Aguilera.
After an enthusiastic voting effort from their fans, Flyleaf's uplifting and moving video for "Missing" won MTV's recent AMtv contest. Additionally, the video has been added to rotation on both MTV2 and mtvU. The epic video takes the form of a modern-day fairy tale to tell a story of hope and strength. The video for "Missing" was inspired by letters from Flyleaf's own fans, who shared their stories of how the band's music helped them to conquer their most personal struggles and discover happiness and peace.

8/18/2009 - Flyleaf Builds Momentum with Release of Memento Mori due Oct. 27
A&M/Octone recording group Flyleaf has announced the October 27th release of MEMENTO MORI, the follow-up to the band's hit 2005 self-titled debut. The album makes its introduction with the debut single "Again," set to impact at multiple formats nationwide on August 25th. To recordMEMENTO MORI, the Belton, Texas-based quintet again teamed with producer Howard Benson, who- in addition to Flyleaf's debut - is known for his work with Papa Roach, My Chemical Romance and The All-American Rejects.
A compelling blend of powerful guitars and soaring melodies, MEMENTO MORI is highlighted by the stirring, melodic "Arise," the thunderous, riff-fueled "Beautiful Bride," the high-flying "Missing," and the dynamic, urgent "Set Apart this Dream." Though song contributions come from every member of the band, MEMENTO MORI features a lyrical theme that started out as a kind of urgent and hopeful personal message from Flyleaf vocalist Lacey to her teenaged sister. "I feel like the new songs began as a kind of open letter to my little sister, saying, 'Please don't make the mistakes that I have made,'" explains the thoughtful and reflective Lacey. "When I'm on stage and look out into the crowd, I see my sister in so many faces. With the title MEMENTO MORI we took that feeling a step further so that it now encompasses meaning for the rest of the band as well; essentially to make the most of the time we've all been given. MEMENTO MORI is universal.
The album's title comes from the well-known Latin phrase that, through the ages, has been uttered as a reminder of the mortality we all share. According to ancient texts, memento mori was historically acted out as a kind of ritual tableau in ancient Rome when a victorious general was welcomed back to the city with a parade: "Standing behind the victorious general was a servant, and he had the task of reminding the general that, though he was up on the peak today, tomorrow was another day. The servant did this by telling the general that he should remember that he was mortal, i.e. 'Memento mori."
Flyleaf recently returned home from their first tour for U.S. troops overseas. The band's diverse itinerary took them from Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan - where they performed before nearly 1,000 hard rocking soldiers - to the distant Forward Operating Base Baylough in southern Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border. Because they were unable to fly to Baylough with their requisite gear, the band entertained their closely assembled audience with a rare acoustic/a cappella set. "It was one of the most humbling and powerful experiences, as far as helping me appreciate life and appreciate what those men and women do for us all," says Lacey.
Flyleaf - Lacey, guitarists Sameer Bhattacharya and Jared Hartmann, bassist Pat Seals, and drummer James Culpepper - have been touring the world nearly non-stop since the September, 2005 release of their self-titled debut album. On the strength on three top-charted Rock singles - "I'm So Sick," "Fully Alive," and the RIAA gold smash "All Around Me" - Flyleaf soared to RIAA platinum heights while steadily drawing new legions of passionate fans. The album spent 133 weeks on the Billboard 200 while staking claims in the top 5 of the Billboard Hard Rock Albums chart and the top 15 of the Billboard Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts. Last year saw the band contribute their rendition of "What's This?" to the star-filled compilation NIGHTMARE REVISITED, a rock homage to the music of director Tim Burton's now classic 1993 film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The five Texans came together as Flyleaf in 2002 when long-time friends Bhattacharya and Hartmann merged their considerable talents with Lacey, Culpepper, and later Seals. "We got together and it was magical," remembers Lacey. "We knew right from the first practice that we had something."

6/10/2009 - Disney ‘newbie’ joins MercyMe, newsboys, Flyleaf, Skillet, Jars of Clay, Chris Tomlin among 14 acts playing Disney’s Hollywood Studios Sept. 11-12
Multi-platinum Christian rock band P.O.D., currently on hiatus following a lengthy world tour, will make its 2009 concert debut as part of a 14-act lineup announced today for Disney’s Night of Joy Sept. 11-12 at Walt Disney World Resort. The musically diverse event at Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park also will feature MercyMe, newsboys, Skillet, Flyleaf, Chris Tomlin, Kutless, Jars of Clay, Grits, Leeland, NEEDTOBREATHE, Superchick, Mandisa and Family Force 5.
Seven acts will perform each evening between 7 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. at stage locations throughout the park. Night of Joy begins after regular park operating hours, with concerts and select park attractions available exclusively for the enjoyment of event ticket holders.
P.O.D. is among four acts new to Night of Joy (along with Grits, NEEDTOBREATHE and Family Force 5), joining a legacy of 134 Christian music acts that have played Night of Joy since 1983. While a Disney “newbie,” the southern California-based band that fuses hard rock with hip-hop, reggae and Latin music is well known in music circles. They’ve been a hit on MTV, won two GMA Dove Awards, been Grammy-nominated, had two platinum-certified albums – one triple platinum – and in past summers played some of the north’s biggest Christian festivals.
But in spring/summer 2009, P.O.D. is chillin’: Vocalist Sonny Sandoval and the rest of the band are home in SoCal enjoying family life following a seven-month world tour that wound up in South America in December, making their Sept. 11 date at Disney P.O.D.’s first gig of the year.
“In the past year we’ve been blessed to play all around the globe but performing at Disney World excites me most of all,” Sandoval said.
The complete Sept. 11 Night of Joy lineup: P.O.D., newsboys, Kutless, Tomlin, NEEDTOBREATHE, Leeland and Superchick.
On Sept. 12, the Studios’ stages will present: Skillet, MercyMe, Jars of Clay, Flyleaf, Family Force 5, Grits and Mandisa.
Eight of the acts are nominated for Gospel Music Association Dove Awards in 2009, topped by Tomlin with seven nominations including artist of the year. Other nominees are Kutless, Leeland, NEEDTOBREATHE, Skillet, MercyMe, Mandisa and Grits.
For Mandisa, Night of Joy will mark her second “guest appearance” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2009. On Feb. 12, she was among an unprecedented gathering of 27 “American Idol” finalists – including the winners from each of the show’s first seven seasons – who participated in a Hollywood gala-style event to premiere “The American Idol Experience.” The new attraction immerses guests in the excitement of the hit TV show “American Idol,” with some guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios auditioning to take the spotlight onstage, while fellow guests cheer them on from the audience and vote for their favorite singer with instant results.
With an innovative ticket – exclusively for groups of 10 or more – that combines a “day” visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Night of Joy admission that evening, guests will have a chance to participate in “The American Idol Experience.” And by booking on or before Aug. 12, the Studios day/Night of Joy group ticket costs just $44.95 plus tax (beginning Aug. 13, it costs $49.95).
There’s also a two-day ticket exclusively for groups of 10 or more that combines Night of Joy admission on both evenings (Sept. 11 and Sept. 12) with two “day visits” to the guest’s choice of Walt Disney World theme parks (one per day) on Night of Joy weekend (Sept. 11-13). Booked on/before Aug. 12, that ticket costs just $89.95 plus tax (beginning Aug. 13, it costs $99.95).
Night of Joy tickets for individuals also are available. One-night tickets purchased in advance (up to the day prior to the event) are $49.95 plus tax (on event day, if available, tickets are $54.95). Two-night tickets (providing admission to Night of Joy on both Sept. 11 and 12) are $84.95 plus tax.
All the details about tickets for groups and individuals are available online at www.nightofjoy.com.
