Having read more than 20,000 stories from people across the world within the last few years, Grammy - and Emmy-nominated recording artist Matthew West recently hosted a 'Storytellers Weekend' for those individuals and families who, out of those thousands, inspired the collections of songs on both his new album, Into the Light, and 2010's The Story of Your Life.
After receiving over 10,000 personal stories from all over the globe for The Story of Your Life, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has been forever impacted by the outpouring of stories, felt as though there was even more for others to say during this season of his music. The new studio album, produced by Pete Kipley, features 12 tracks inspired by 10,000 new letters submitted after West invited people to, once again, send him their stories. The songs making up this sixth studio project were written mostly while he was on tour this spring. The tracks comprising Into the Light were inspired by stories touching on everything from the power of forgiveness, drug addiction, the rejection of apathy, domestic violence and many other topics. The album is now available for preorder on iTunes, featuring a bonus track acoustic version of "Forgiveness," as well as a behind-the-song video about the single: smarturl.it/intothelight.
Each of the storytellers who inspired these tracks were in attendence for West's Storytellers Weekend 2012 and were surprised with a special dinner, concert and commemorative plaques, presented by West, bearing handwritten lyrics to the song their story inspired. In addition, they were treated to a night at the Grand Ole Opry, where West performed.
The lead single from Into The Light, “ Forgiveness,” is continuing to surge up the charts at radio, with it claiming the No. 4 spot on the National Audience Chart, No. 4 at Christian AC Monitored, No. 2 at AC Indicator and No. 12 at CHR this week. In addition to already charting in the Top 5 on the National Christian Audience chart, the single garnered over 7.5 million audience impressions this week. "Forgiveness" also stands firm in the Top 10 on the iTunes® Christian & Gospel Songs chart, where it has remained most of the summer.
West kicks off his headlining "The Into The Light Tour" on Thurs., Sept. 20 in Dallas and will be hitting 33 markets through the fall. For a complete listing of tour dates and cities, visit http://www.matthewwest.com/tour/.
Renee Napier, who inspired the hit single " Forgiveness," with West, as he presented her with a commemorative plaque bearing handwritten lyrics to the song.
Two-time GRAMMY® nominee Matthew West is set to follow up his critically acclaimed 2010 album, The Story of Your Life, with the release of a collection of brand-new songs titled Into The Light on September 25, 2012. The new studio album, produced by Pete Kipley, features 12 tracks inspired by letters submitted by the thousands after West invited people to send him their stories. The songs making up this sixth studio project from West were written mostly while he was on tour this spring with Casting Crowns.
After receiving over 10,000 personal stories from all over the globe for his 2010 project, The Story of Your Life, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has been forever impacted by the outpouring of stories, felt as though there was even more for others to say during this season of his music. West collected stories for this new project through the end of March. The tracks comprising Into the Light were inspired by stories touching on everything from drug addiction, the rejection of apathy, abusive relationships and the faith we find in the waiting.
"There is power in a story," says West. "And we all have a story to tell. Over the last few years, I have had the honor of reading over 20,000 stories from people all over the world who have answered my invitation to share the story of their lives. The songs on Into the Light are inspired by these amazing, real-life stories. Each one has had a profound impact on my life, and I can't wait to share these stories and songs with the world. I believe the stories told on this record will challenge all who hear to discover the hope, healing and freedom that can only be found when we step out of the darkness and into the light."
The lead single from Into The Light, “Forgiveness,” is quickly gaining ground at radio, with it claiming the No. 10 spot on the National Audience Chart, No. 15 at Christian AC Monitored, No. 11 at AC Indicator and No. 24 at CHR this week. In addition to already charting in the Top 10 on the National Christian Audience chart, the single garnered over 5 million audience impressions this week. "Forgiveness" has been in the Top 10 on the iTunes® Christian & Gospel Songs chart since its release earlier this month.
West penned the powerful track after hearing the story of Renee Napier, whose 20-year-old daughter, Megan, was killed in a car wreck by a drunk driver, Eric Smallridge, over Mother’s Day weekend in 2001. Smallridge was convicted of DUI manslaughter and was sentenced to 22 years in prison. However, Napier has not only forgiven the man responsible for her daughter's death—she even thinks of him like a son. In fact, she actually petitioned the court, which agreed to cut Smallridge's 22-year sentence in half; he will be released from prison this fall. After hearing this story, West felt compelled to not only write a song inspired by Napier’s courageous and humbling act of forgiveness, but he also felt convicted to give her story a voice to reach those who may not have the chance to hear it otherwise. Thus, West’s song “Forgiveness” sets the stage for the 11 other gripping stories which are Into The Light.
The video for the story behind “Forgiveness” is one of the most-watched on the popular video site GodTube, totaling over 50,000 views within just a few days of posting. To view the video, visit GodTube's site here.

To view the wake up call, visit http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/videogallery/index.html?media_id=100925731. Atlantis marks the final mission of America’s 30-year shuttle program.

This devotional journey inspires readers to discover God as the author of their unique lives and to share the power of their story.
“As stories began to pour in by the thousands, I quickly sensed that not only was something special taking place, but that my life was about to change,” explains West. “During those months, my eyes were opened to see the world outside my door like I had never witnessed before.”

The first single, “My Own Little World” has already received a warm welcome at digital outlets and Christian radio ranking in at top 10 on AC Indicator, No. 14 on the National Christian Audience chart and No. 16 on AC Monitor with over 80 stations playing the song. The songs sets the tone for the entire album and reflects on how the stories changed West. “ I look at the world in a different way,” explains West. “The words of ‘My Little World’ are how this process has changed me. It’s not about me and the irony of this record is that I’ve never been so excited about a record - and it’s not about me. I’m the singer and the messenger and I connect with these songs, and it fires me up.” To hear the story behind “My Own Little World,” visit http://vimeo.com/14209837.

One thousand responded in the first two days alone, leading to the thousands that answered from across the world. He then spent two months in a cabin outside of Nashville, Tenn. reading every story and then transforming them into songs for the record. The songs range from joyful stories about adoption and victories over cancer, to heart-breaking letters of abuse and broken homes. “As stories began to pour in by the thousands, I quickly sensed that not only was something special taking place, but that my life was about to change,” explains West. “During those months, my eyes were opened to see the world outside my door like I had never witnessed before.”

West serves as a trusted storyteller for the 11-track album which was produced by the renowned Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Steven Curtis Chapman, Michael W. Smith) and Pete Kipley (MercyMe, David Crowder*Band). For example, the song “Family Tree” tackles the issue of generational baggage inspired by a girl’s story. From another letter about the joys of adoption, West wrote the song “One Less.” “Broken Girl” was taken from a submitted story of abuse.
The first single, “My Own Little World,” which is at radio now and will hit digital retailers on Aug. 17, is a powerful release as it sets the stage for the remaining tracks. Already, the single is the most added song at AC this week with 38 total stations playing the song, as well as debuting at No. 28 on AC indicator and New & Active on the AC Monitor chart. The single premiered exclusively on West’s facebook page late last week where around 25,000 people listened to the song in only 24 hours. In regards to “My Own Little World,” West says, “I first walked into the cabin with my own little world being ‘population me,’ but with each new story, God began to change all that. This is the song that talks about how these thousands of stories opened my eyes and my heart to see the world outside my door through the eyes of my savior, through the eyes of compassion.”

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) April 7, 2010--Celebrated singer/songwriter Matthew West has begun work on his latest project, The Story of Your Life, to release fall 2010. A natural continuation of his best-selling 2008 album, Something to Say, West’s upcoming project will tell the real life stories of his fans.
“Something to Say was written in the hopes of encouraging others that they really do have something to say...they matter,” says West. “God has created everyone to live a life that will tell a story of His love to the world in a unique and amazing way. I see now that these lyrics from the last record were pointing the way to where I would be heading with the next album: Your life is the song that you sing, and the whole wide world is listening.”
Beginning early March, West began collecting stories via his web site. In a month’s time, he has received thousands of submissions from fans sharing the most important moments of their lives. These stories will be the foundation for those songs on The Story of Your Life.
“Several months ago I had a vision of the inside of a cabin with thousands of stories from people printed out and spread all over the tables and floors and couches and chairs,” West explains. “I had a vision that I would be there in the cabin, reading the stories, praying for inspiration, and writing like crazy.”
That vision became a reality, as West spent the month of March in a cabin in Tennessee reading stories and writing The Story of Your Life. He will continue collecting stories and writing songs through late April.
“I’m excited to see what kinds of songs come out of this experience,” says West. “Even more, I am honored to share this journey with my fans.”

GRAMMY Award nominated singer/songwriter Matthew West recently partnered with national network K-LOVE Radio for a third consecutive year on its “Next Great Love Song” promotion. The contest drew more than 4,000 submissions from which one entrant was selected to win a custom love song performed by West.
Beginning Jan. 29, listeners were asked to submit their love stories as inspiration for the “Next Great Love Song,” written and recorded by West. On February 5, Grand Prize winner Ann Mathews’ story, recounting her husband’s unconditional love during her near fatal battle with breast cancer, was chosen as the subject of West’s original song “Hold You Up.” The song debuts today on the K-LOVE morning show and is currently available for purchase via itunes at http://tinyurl.com/yjsk588. You can read Ann’s story in its entirety at www. http://www.klove.com/promodetails.aspx?i=5531.
“Doing this ‘Next Great Love Song’ contest with KLOVE has become something I look forward to every year,” says West. “The thought of writing music inspired by the people who actually listen to my music has been really refreshing, and I was honored to read through so many real life love stories. This story from Ann Matthews, a story of unconditional love through some of the most trying circumstances imaginable, had all the ingredients I needed to write the winning song. Thanks to K-LOVE for the opportunity, and to all the listeners for opening a window into their worlds.”
This is the third year West has participated in the “Next Great Love Song” promotion, writing “Waiting For You” in 2008 and last year’s “When I Say I Do.” Mike Tedesco, Promotions Director at KLOVE, comments, “Year after year Matthew West writes a song based on one couples' love story that ends up deeply resonating with the audience as a whole. Listeners hear Matthew's song in February and are still emailing and calling us about it 6 months later. That's powerful.”

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Nov. 17, 2009--Award-winning singer/songwriter Matthew West heads toward the holidays with a mission to remind others of the true reason for the season.
West was inspired by the song “Give This Christmas Away,” to be serviced to radio Nov. 27, which he wrote and recorded in conjunction with VeggieTales for its new DVD release, Saint Nicholas—A Story of Joyful Giving. The campaign calls attention to practical ways we can reach out to those in need around us.
West explains, “What it means to me to ‘give this Christmas away’ is to pause long enough to look at the world from a perspective of ‘How can I help? How can I give? How can God use me to help meet the needs of somebody else this Christmas instead of just checking off the list of everything I want?’”
In keeping with that sentiment, West, spokesperson for Operation Christmas Child, a division of the international relief organization Samaritan's Purse, is asking fans who attend his fall tour to donate shoe box gifts for children in need this holiday season. The collection will continue on West’s “Give This Christmas Away” Christmas tour, kicking off late November.
Furthermore, West offers additional ideas for living out the Christmas spirit via a book release, 101 Ways to Give This Christmas Away, to be published by Tyndale Publishers. The book, along with a Something to Say Christmas Edition featuring “Give This Christmas Away” and three new acoustic recordings, will be available in retail stores this month. Finally, West will also have his own Christmas special on the Gospel Music Channel centered on the “Give This Christmas Away” theme, airing Saturday, December 12, at 9:30 pm EST. “The inspiration for the song and the book came from this question: What if December looked different this year?” says Matthew. “My hope is to encourage an attitude of giving this Christmas that can change the world with God’s love.”

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) Sept. 29, 2009-- Award-winning artist Matthew West announces the kick-off of “The Motions Tour,” launching next month and running through early November. The tour will additionally feature speaker Lance McAfee, who was impacted by West’s song “The Motions,” and Sparrow Records singer-songwriter Josh Wilson.
Named after West’s most recent hit, which was No. 1 at Christian AC radio for 14 consecutive weeks, the tour is an extension of “The Motions” national campaign that has captured hearts across America. Like “The Motions” web site (www.MatthewWest.com/themotions), where fans can voice their commitment to “avoid the trap of simply going through the motions,” the tour intends to connect attendees with the song’s life-changing message. Lance McAfee, whose story was one of 2,700 resolutions posted to The Motions web site, left an indelible impression on West, who invited McAffee to share how the song affected his brother Ryan’s life while encouraging concert-goers to live their own lives intentionally as well.
“I think one of the greatest challenges in actively living out a relationship with Christ on earth is to avoid the trap of simply going through THE MOTIONS,” says West. "God is a God of PASSION. His true plan for our lives is anything but boring. Every day, the God of adventure beckons his sons and daughters to quit going through the motions, and walk into a life filled with passion and wonder. Our desire is for ‘The Motions Tour’ to be more than just a show...more than just a night of entertainment. We have put a lot of prayer and thought into providing an evening that will leave a lasting impact on the lives of those who attend.”

He signed to Sparrow Records in 2006 and released his major label debut, Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup, April 29, 2008. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Matthew West celebrates 13 consecutive weeks at No. 1 with “The Motions,” the second chart-topping single from his current project, Something to Say. Additionally, West’s “Nothing to Say” documentary will premiere this Friday, July 17, on the Gospel Music Channel at 10:00 pm EST/9:00 pm CST.
“The Motions” follows West’s debut hit from Something to Say, “You Are Everything,” which was the most played song of 2008. In addition to holding at No. 1 on Radio & Records’ Christian AC Monitored and the Billboard Christian chart for 13 weeks, the single is the most downloaded Christian digital track 11 weeks running, according to SoundScan. Most recently, “The Motions” was featured in a NASCAR special on race car driver Mark Martin, and West has scheduled performances of the song on WGN’s morning show, Moody Radio, and the “700 Club” later this month. For more information on “The Motions,” visit www.matthewwest.com/motions.
“Songs with this kind of impact, and this kind of chart life are rare,” says Vice President of National Promotions for EMI CMG, Grant Hubbard. “It’s great to be a part of this kind of success for Matthew and Something to Say.”
Adding to his current spotlight is West’s “Nothing to Say” documentary, which will premiere on the Gospel Music Channel Friday. Two years ago West underwent major surgery to have a polyp removed from his vocal cord. It was uncertain whether he would ever be able to sing again, and he was restricted from talking for two months following the procedure. The “Nothing to Say” documentary captures West’s journey through surgery and recovery, sharing his range of fears and emotions in this real life story of redemption.
“'Nothing to Say’ is my true story of brokenness and redemption,” says West. “Having vocal cord surgery is a singer's greatest fear. The film follows my journey through one of the weakest and most uncertain seasons of my life, with the hope of encouraging anyone facing a trial of their own.”
West catapulted onto the Christian music scene in 2003 with his debut single, “More,” which was the most played Christian AC song of 2003. The multi-Dove Award nominee and sought-after songwriter released two critically-acclaimed recordings, Happy (2003) and History (2005); has been a mainstay at Christian radio with memorable hits like “Only Grace,” “History” and “Next Thing You Know”; and has toured with such artists as tobyMac and Jeremy Camp on the wildly popular 2008 “Boomin’ Beyond Measure” tour. In addition, West has penned songs for Rascal Flatts, Billy Ray Cyrus, Natalie Grant and Mandisa, among others.
West’s third studio recording, Something To Say, released January 15, 2008 and debuted on Nielsen SoundScan’s Christian Retail Chart at #10, while West was the best-selling Christian artist on iTunes the week of its release. The album’s debut single “You Are Everything” additionally peaked at No. 1 on Christian AC radio and was the most played Christian song of 2008, while “Something to Say” climbed to No. 7 at AC radio. Last fall, West headlined a 27-city “Something to Say” tour featuring label mate Josh Wilson followed by a WAY-FM/Word Vision tour with Sanctus Real in February. West will embark on “The Motions” tour in September; additional details are forthcoming. For more information on Matthew West, visit www.matthewwest.com or www.myspace.com/matthewwest.

Such momentum has driven nearly a 600 % increase in digital sales of the song over two months, currently making it the second best-selling Christian single, as indicated by SoundScan’s Christian/Gospel Digital Tracks chart. Sales of the album itself have tripled since the beginning of the year, and Something To Say is currently featured as part of iTunes $7.99 Easter promotion.

“‘The Motions’ came from a very real place, inspired by my own struggle to rise above the lukewarm Christian life,” says West. “The overwhelming response to the song has showed me that people everywhere are tired of just going through the motions of their lives. This is what led us to create an online community at my website, a place where we can join in the journey together. Every day I visit the ‘Motions’ community, and I am blown away by the hundreds of people who have been inspired to rise above whatever their circumstances may be, and say ‘I will not go through the motions.’”

Dove Award-winning singer/songwriter Matthew West’s “You Are Everything” was the most played song at Christian radio in 2008, according to a year-end report by Radio & Records. This is West’s second song to earn “Song of The Year” status, following “More” in 2003.
Making its radio debut in October of 2007, “You Are Everything” maintained chart status for more than 11 months. The song’s longevity also helped West to achieve positioning as the No. 2 AC artist of 2008.
“I am thankful to be singing again after recovering from what I thought could be career-ending vocal surgery last year,” says West. “‘You Are Everything’ was the first song I recorded in the studio after my recovery. So, to see the way it has connected with listeners through the radio just confirms to me there is a reason for everything that happens in this life. I sing with purpose now, and a renewed passion for connecting to the hearts of people through my music.”
“It’s amazing to see how ‘You Are Everything’ has connected with radio listeners nationwide,” says Grant Hubbard, vice president of national promotions for EMI CMG. “As radio becomes more and more competitive, the fact that it stayed on the chart for over 11 months speaks to how powerful this song is. Matthew is an incredibly talented artist, and it’s an honor to help introduce his songs to radio stations and listeners.”

(NASHVILLE,
Tenn.) Aug. 28, 2008—Dove Award-winning singer/songwriter Matthew West
announces the fall 2008 “Something To Say” tour with special guest, Sparrow
Records’ newest talent Josh Wilson. The tour, to be sponsored by World
Vision with additional promotion from HearItFirst.com, will visit 25+ cities
through the middle of November.
Just prior to recording Something to Say last year,
West was diagnosed with a serious vocal chord injury that required major
surgery. Following the procedure in May 2007, he entered a 2-month period
of complete silence. It was during this time, while sitting in church one Sunday,
that West’s pastor quoted C.S. Lewis: “God whispers to us in our pleasures,
speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains; it is His megaphone to rouse
a deaf world.” This quote so resonated with West that he made it the central
theme of his latest project, released in January 2008, as well as the
forthcoming tour. He comments, “God is at work in every circumstance of our
lives…even the silence. He wants to take the part of our lives we consider
damaged goods and turn it to good.”
In addition to great music, the
tour will feature clips from, “Nothing to Say,” a DVD documenting West’s
journey through surgery and recovery. Also unique to the tour is media partner
HearItFirst.com, who has pledged its support through e-mail notifications to
members, a site-skinning promotion, tour page, and exclusive content including
video updates from the road. A current list of tour dates follows this release.
“I
can’t wait for the ‘Something to Say Tour’ to begin this October,” says West.
“I know many people have only heard my music on the radio, but never in a live
concert setting. This fall, all that will change. My hope for this tour is that
our concerts will be more than just another show, but an experience that takes
the audience on a journey. We are also teaming up with World Vision to give all
who attend the concerts something to say about helping children in need all
over the world. I hope you won’t miss this ‘something to say’ experience!”
“World
Vision is so excited to be partnering with Matthew on the ‘Something to Say’
tour,” says Ben Greene, artist representative for World Vision. “His heart and
passion for the most vulnerable children of the world is contagious, and we
know that all in attendance will receive an experience to remember.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Amidst a string of national television and concert appearances, Sparrow singer/songwriter Matthew West is enjoying the top song in the country at Christian AC radio this week with “You Are Everything,” the debut single from his January 15 best-selling release, Something To Say.
Written by West and Sam Mizell, the #1 hit on both R&R’s March 7 Christian AC National Airplay chart and Billboard’s March 15 Hot Christian Songs chart holds deep personal significance for West, following vocal chord surgery last year that left him unable to speak for a total of two months during the ordeal.
“This song took on a new meaning in my life after my surgery,” West says. “Before we can have ‘something to say’ to the world, our hearts and our priorities must first be realigned to rely completely on Jesus, and our confidence in Him and His strength. Sometimes it takes being faced with losing something to allow God to truly become your Everything. I see it now.”
Audiences around the country can hear West’s live performance of “You Are Everything” as part of the AT&T sponsored “Boomin’ Beyond Measure” Tour with TobyMac and Jeremy Camp. One of the top tours in Christian music this season, the “Boomin’ Beyond Measure” Tour hit Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Denver and Minneapolis, among other cities, and will conclude later this month.
West can also currently be seen on the Billy Graham Television Special, “America’s Dream: Chasing Happiness,” airing in cities across the U.S. through March 9. The program showcases the world-premiere video of West’s powerful song, “Nothing Else.”
In addition to his latest #1 hit, West, a sought-after songwriter who has penned songs recorded by Rascal Flatts, Billy Ray Cyrus and Natalie Grant, among others, co-wrote “Voice Of A Savior,” the latest single from American Idol finalist and Sparrow recording artist Mandisa. West also co-penned “Thank You,” the new single from emerging INO band 33Miles.
Something To Say, West’s third studio recording and first project in more than two years, was the highest debut, at #7, on Nielsen SoundScan’s Christian Retail chart for the week ending January 20. Produced by Brown Bannister, Ed Cash and Christopher Stevens, the album is West’s Sparrow Records debut and his most personal project to date.
A new chapter in History has been opened for Universal South recording artist Matthew West and his wife, Emily. Their first child, Luella Jane West, came into the world at 7:20 PM on January 16. Luella weighed 5lbs. 10oz. at birth, and will surely be an inspiration for many new songs in the years to come.
