Stories To Tell has also received shoutouts on Twitter, courtesy of tweets from such popular artists as Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum, Jon McLaughlin, reaching well over two million people. So what are the critics saying about Barnes and his Stories To Tell? With reviews in USA Today and Billboard and coverage with HearItFirst, GMCTV, All Access, CCM, NewReleaseTuesday, here are a few highlights:
“Straddling the fence between the CCM music world and the secular, Dave Barnes has been praised by artists from Amy Grant to John Mayer for standing out as a talented singer/songwriter. Stories to Tell should uphold his reputation with its catchy, acoustic tunes, and positive outlook.”
- ChristianityToday.com
"...He has a knack for plying himself to songs that act as slice-of-life vignettes, specific and vague where they ought to be, that resonate with common experience and occasionally challenge. The sum of all those parts should continue the interest...in Barnes' Stories."
- CBA Retailers + Resources
"Dave Barnes is back with his Southern hospitality, though not without stylistic changes for good measure; both old and new fans will be more than
enthralled with his Stories To Tell."
- JesusFreakHideout.com
"The new Dave Barnes record grabs love and wrastles it. His songwriting clamps very near the center of my chest-the place where great music truly resides. It's honest. It's hope-filled. It's full of ideas and wonder about our world. I bet when other artists hear it they'll say to themselves, 'I wish I'd written that with Dave.' I will gladly take that wager."
- ListenIn.org review and feature
Barnes also continues to hit big at radio with Stories To Tell's first radio single, "Mine To Love." Writing the song after he found out he and his wife were pregnant with their first child, "I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility of having a child, and this song poured out of all those emotions," he shares. "I've never been as emotional as I was writing this song. I had to stop a few times while writing it." The single is on sale for $.69 at iTunes through April 3rd.
Barnes recently paid a visit to KLOVE and Air1 to share his new songs from Stories To Tell. Pictured below is Barnes with Air1 Program Director Paul Goldsmith and K-LOVE Program Director Chuck Pryor.
GRAMMY®-nominated singer songwriter Dave Barnes’ upcoming new studio album, Stories To Tell, is available now for pre-order. Stories To Tell is set for release on March 13th and features 11 new tracks produced by John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Goo Goo Dolls, Jonas Brothers, P!nk). The single “White Flag” is also available now for purchase and goes toTriple A radio on February 27th. Another single from Stories To Tell, "Mine To Love," is at iTunes as well. Barnes is no stranger to commercial radio success with his last single “God Gave Me You” peaking at No. 21 at Adult Contemporary and No. 72 at Hot AC (Blake Shelton’s version of the song peaked at No. 1 on Country Radio). Barnes is also frequently heard at Christian radio with “God Gave Me You” peaking at No. 3 at Christian CHR and No. 8 on Christian AC radio.
Dave Barnes recently received his first GRAMMY nomination for Best Country Song for “God Gave Me You,” as performed by Blake Shelton from Shelton’s 2011 album Red River Blue. Barnes’ and Shelton’s versions of the song have sold over one million singles to date and the song has had enormous success at radio.
Stories To Tell is Barnes’ fourth studio album for Razor & Tie and a first for Barnes on many levels. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer John Fields, marking the first time Barnes has recorded outside of his hometown of Nashville, TN. Leaving everything familiar behind with his writing and recording processes forced Barnes to venture outside of his creative comfort zone. Stories To Tell also presents astylistic departure from his previous releases. Adding more programming and synth sounds than previous his albums, Stories To Tell did not suffer from rules and restrictions when it comes to instrumentation. The electronic flourishes on this album add dynamics that are not typical when it comes to most singer-songwriters. Using orchestral accents, syncopated percussion alongside his soulful, impassioned vocals, the album introduces Barnes’ fans to eleven finely tuned and honestly crafted songs with a strong pop sound. An artist that has never adhered to a specific genre, Barnes’ music is generally inspired by an array of music influences ranging from rock, pop and country to blues, soul and R&B.
Barnes’ last album, the 2010 release What We Want, What We Get, features the GRAMMY-nominated song “God Gave Me You.” This album debuted at No. 59 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart, No. 17 on the Billboard Rock Chart and No. 15 on the digital albums chart. Barnes has sold over 155,000 albums to date and over 600,000 individual song downloads. He has toured with notable acts including John Mayer, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Bonnie Raitt, and One Republic as well as festivals such as Bonnaroo. His music has been featured in television shows such as CW’s “Life Unexpected,” Disney’s “Suite Life On Deck,” ABC’s“ Brothers And Sisters” and WB’s “Summerland,” as well as the films "Employee Of The Month" and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend."
Dave Barnes' songs have been covered by a bevy of other artists including, country singers Blake Shelton and Billy Currington as well as Marc Broussard, Kelly Clarkson, Bethany Dillon, to name a few. He has been recognized by the industry as a rising songwriter. Billboard Magazine touted “Many of the best pop songwriters come out of Nashville, and Dave Barnes is one such singer/scribe now building momentum." Dave Barnes is signed to leading independent label Razor & Tie and is administered by Razor & Tie Music Publishing.

Razor & Tie artist Dave Barnes will release his new studio album, Stories To Tell, on March 13, 2012. The 11-track album of original material was produced by John Fields (Lifehouse, Switchfoot, Goo Goo Dolls, Jonas Brothers, P!nk). Barnes will tour in 2012 in support of his new release (tour dates to soon follow). He recently received his first GRAMMY® nomination for Best Country Song for “God Gave Me You,” the #1 hit as performed by Blake Shelton from Shelton’s 2011 album Red River Blue. Barnes’ and Shelton’s versions of the song have sold over one million singles to date.
Stories To Tell is Barnes’ fourth studio album for Razor & Tie and a first for him on many levels. The album was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Fields, marking the first time Barnes has recorded outside of his hometown of Nashville. Leaving everything familiar behind with his writing and recording processes forced him to venture outside of his creative comfort zone. Barnes explains, “I've done all the other records in Nashville, but for this one I really wanted to do something different. I wanted to get out of town and do something that wouldn't sound quite as much like the stuff I've done before.”
Stories To Tell also presents a stylistic departure from his previous releases. Adding more programming and synth sounds this time around, Stories To Tell did not suffer from rules and restrictions when it came to its instrumentation. Using orchestral accents and syncopated percussion alongside his soulful, impassioned vocals, the album introduces Barnes' fans to finely tuned and honestly crafted strong pop songs.
"The music is definitely poppy but everything is accounted for," he describes. "There are no rogue parts or instrumentation, everything is really fleshed out and that's what I was going for thankfully. Working with John, I knew he does what I wanted to do, which is make a little more of a pop record and get out of the self-imposed box I've been in for a while.”
The underlying theme of the new album is Barnes' stories to tell, most plucked from his personal life and experiences. Writing much of the album earlier this year after discovering that he and his wife were going to have their first baby, two songs directly inspired by the news are “Mine to Love” and “One of Us.” Another major theme of this album is enjoying the moment because life has unexpected twists. “White Flag” and “Heaven Help Me” reflect this sentiment.
An artist that has never adhered to a specific genre, Barnes’ music is generally inspired by an array of music influences ranging from rock, pop and country to blues, soul and R&B. “Stories To Tell is another bookmark," adds Barnes. "For me, that's why I love making records; not because I was going for a specific sound but I was trying to encompass everything that I was listening to and enjoying at that time in my life. It is like a fun kind of musical history, like a photo album."
With his multi-format hit, "God Gave Me You," the single peaked at #3 at Christian Top 40, as well as Top 10 on Christian AC and Top 20 on Mainstream AC. Making a solid mark within Christian radio, "Mine To Love" will be the first song from Stories to Tell to impact Christian radio, releasing February 3rd.
Razor & Tie artist Dave Barnes has received his first Grammy® nomination for Best Country Song for “God Gave Me You,” as performed by Blake Shelton. Barnes’ and Shelton’s versions of the song have sold over one million singles to date. Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You” has spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Country Singles Chart, with three weeks at number one and is his fastest rising single to date.
Razor & Tie Co-Owners Cliff Chenfeld and Craig Balsam commented, “We have been proud to work with Dave Barnes for five years and he is an extraordinary artist and writer. Dave's songs are personal and universal and touch people in a very special way. This nomination is well deserved and reflects Dave’s commitment to quality and honesty.”
Nashville-based Dave Barnes wrote and recorded “God Gave Me You” originally for his 2010 release What We Want, What We Get. Blake Shelton decided to record a version of the song after hearing Barnes’ version on the radio and soon after added it to his eighth studio album released in 2011, Red River Blue.
Shelton recently explained to AOL’s The Boot, “That song came on and I almost had to pull the truck over. It was one of those moments for me where I felt like I was hearing that song at that moment for a reason. I actually got on iTunes and downloaded the song as I was driving home. I probably listened to it 20 times before I got home that day, and I called [my producer] Scott Hendricks and said, 'Man, I found a song I want to cut.' There was never a question, I never looked back after that. I knew it was going to be a pivotal song for the album."
Dave Barnes will release his fourth studio album for the Razor & Tie label in early 2012. The album (details soon to be announced) was produced by John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Lifehouse, Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, Andrew W.K., Jonas Brothers, Pink). Dave Barnes last album What We Want, What We Get debuted at #59 on the Billboard top 200 album chart in 2010 and #15 on the digital albums chart. Barnes has sold over 155,000 albums to date and over 510,000 individual song downloads-update. He is currently on tour and will tour in 2012 as well. Barnes has previously toured with notable acts including John Mayer, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Bonnie Raitt, and One Republic as well as festivals such as Bonnaroo. His music has been featured in television shows such as CW’s “Life Unexpected,” Disney’s “Suite Life On Deck,” ABC’s“ Brothers And Sisters” and WB’s “Summerland,” as well as the films Employee Of The Month and My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
Dave Barnes is no stranger to having his music plucked by country singers as Billy Currington re-recorded Barnes’ radio hit “Until You” for Currington’s 2010 release. Barnes’ work has been performed by other artists including Marc Broussard, Kelly Clarkson, Bethany Dillon, to name a few. Barnes has been recognized by the industry as a rising songwriter. Billboard Magazine touted “Many of the best pop songwriters come out of Nashville, and Dave Barnes is one such singer/scribe now building momentum." Dave Barnes is signed to leading independent label Razor & Tie and is administered by Razor & Tie Music Publishing.

His boyish good looks, personable manner and self-deprecating humor had the audience -- who sang along and even cheered on cue -- eating out of the palm of his hand."

But what are the music critics saying? Do the words "excellent," "flawless," "genuine," and "masterfully executed" give you any ideas? Read on....
"....What I like best about Barnes is his penchant for writing about that place outside the typical Christian music framework....Think about the best singer/songwriters in your music collection, the ones who craft songs that stick in your head long after you’re unplugged, and add Dave Barnes to the mix. He’s that good." - gmclife.com

"With the help of longtime producer Ed Cash, this Nashville-based singer-songwriter has crafted a collection that is perfect for a windows-down drive on a warm spring day and deep enough for a contemplative afternoon at the coffeehouse. What We Want, What We Get straddles that fine line between pop and pulpit, asking the question, "What do we do when life doesn't turn out like it should?" The answer? Crank up more of this addictive pop and sing along." - Rhapsody.com

"In writing and performing the songs on What We Want..., Barnes has clearly pulled from several influences, and his integration of these varying sounds is nearly flawless. It would be hard to identify a single weak track on this album, as each one has its own appeal and the quality is consistently top shelf. Ironically, with What We Want, What We Get, the listener gets exactly what he wants. This is modern pop at its most genuine, original, and masterfully executed."

I am not a seasoned Dave Barnes fan, in fact I think this album may be the first music of his that I have heard. However, he has made a great impression on me for sure! The first aspect of his music I noticed was the syncopated rhythm that is very prominent throughout Dave’s repertoire. The next thing I noticed was his smooth, soothing voice. With the soft, acoustic, at times bluesy feel in his music, this is great music for any occasion. Crank up the volume and sing along to the flowing melodies and sway to the beat as the harmonies sung by Matt Wertz, Ed Cash, and Drew Ramsey carry you away.
Featuring the songs “God Gave Me You” and the title track, “What We Want, What We Get,” this album will capture your romantic side while appealing to your musical taste. Each song on this album can be best described as individual. Every song is unique so much so that by the end of the album, I could look back over the titles of each and every song and hum a few bars without listening to it again. That is rare today as many albums sort of blend in together. If you are a fan of artists such as Jimmy Needham or John Mayer, lend an ear to Dave Barnes with his newest release, “What We Want, What We Get.”
