10 Best Family Action Movies of All Time

Action movies are usually the most sought after films. Whether it be from the explosions, the gun fights, or the car chases, we are very easily drawn towards them. We love watching Arnold Schwarzenegger taking down people in the Terminator, Indiana Jones finding himself in various adventures, or a host of other movies we can certainly think of and recall easily to our memories. It’s a popular genre, to say the least. So, the following is a list of the 10 best family action movies of all time. Get ready for some action!

 10. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Based on the beloved children’s tale, this movie is not lacking in action and adventure. Despite having children as the main protagonists, there are ample amounts of danger, adventure, and even fighting scenes. Don’t worry, however; the movie does all of this quite gracefully, making it age appropriate for most audiences and ages. To give you a frame of reference, I have watched this movie with young girls between the ages of 6-9 and they both loved it. Before watching any movie, though, I encourage parents to look up the rating and a list of scenes that may be questionable (which can be found on imdb.com).

 9. The Pacifier

Vin Diesel in a family movie? Yes! Diesel plays a shamed Navy Seal who gets assigned to watch over five children due to the top secret work that their deceased father was doing. The movie is action packed (with Vin Diesel how can it not be?) and can provide a good amount of laughs, too.

 8. Night at the Museum

This movie is a personal favorite of mine. Ben Stiller does a great job in his role as a newly appointed security guard for the night shift at the Museum of Natural History. In this wonderful tale, the creatures in the museum actually come to life, forcing Stiller to adjust his ways of being a security. It’s funny, comedic, and a pretty wholesome movie for the whole family.

 7. Get Smart

An older generation will appreciate (even if they don’t like it) this movie, since it’s based on the old one. With a cast that includes Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, and Dwayne Johnson, this film is both action- packed and very funny.

 6. National Treasure

In a hunt for histories mysteries, Nicholas Cage plays Benjamin Gates, a wickedly smart historian on a quest to find a mysteriously hidden treasure. While both learning about history and being thoroughly entertained, this movie has proven it belongs on this list.

 5. The Princess Bride

Yes. A cult favorite with a very loyal following, even after all these years. It’s brutally sarcastic, extremely funny, and very much re-watchable. Apart from a couple of curse words (maybe 1-2), it is completely clean.

 4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Very controversial amongst some Christians, but if your conscience is clean watching a movie like this, than it is a decent choice. It has a fairly interesting plot, which allows much action and adventure into the story. You’ll meet weird creatures, people that can do magic, and a very interesting protagonist. Mix that in with the mystery and intrigue of the series (and the books) and you have quite an action-filled movie!

 3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

You need a good chunk of time to watch this movie. But, if you are able to sit still through it all, you will be very happy about it. It’s as action packed as you can get…and without guns or explosions! Frodo is a masterful character that will leave you intrigued throughout.

 2. The Hobbit

A more recent movie, The Hobbit is an excellent choice for those who have loved The Lord of the Rings. If you are a newcomer to the series, however, then this is actually the perfect place for you to start! Then, you can start watching them in chronological order. But, make sure you have a lot of time on your hands…

 1. The Avengers

Of course, a superhero movie had to be thrown onto the list! The Avengers includes a whole cast full of superheroes, such as: Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, and even Captain America. With so many heroes under one roof, you can be sure a lot of action will follow.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a family-friendly action movie, then all of these movies are up for grabs. However, don’t just assume every movie is appropriate for your family. After all, every family is different and can include different values along with different ages of children. For example, The Avengers might be appropriate for a family with middle school children, but maybe not for a three year old. Use wisdom, check the ratings, and if you’re still unsure then watch the movie before your kids do. If you’re still undecided I would say: when in doubt, leave it out.
