10 Clean Songs To Play At A Christian School Dance

In my high school years I have some great memories of my school dances, but to be honest I have some not so great memories too when it came to some of the songs that were played. Music today has lost integrity and morality in many of the top hits on the radio. If you are part of the team figuring out what music to play for the students, please consider what messages you are giving them. “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen is a good example of what not to play. Sure, it is very catchy and you can easily get lost in the “feel good” vibe of the song. But if you listen closely you hear lines like, “I trade my soul for a wish.” That’s a very bold and unwise decision. We all need to pay attention to what kids are listening to. Here are 10 clean songs that you can play at your Christian school dances! These are not all labeled as “Christian” but they are definitely ok to play at a dance!

10. Footloose, Kenny Loggins

Favorite Lyric – “You’re burning, yearning for songs…somebody to tell you that life ain’t passing you by. I’m trying to tell you it will if you don’t even try.”

9. Overcomer, Mandisa

Favorite Lyric – “You're an overcomer! Stay in the fight ‘til the final round. You're not going under. ‘Cause God is holding you right now. You might be down for a moment, feeling like it's hopeless. That's when He reminds you that you're an overcomer! You're an overcomer!”

8. You And Me, Lifehouse

Favorite Lyric – “Something about you now I can't quite figure out. Everything she does is beautiful. Everything she does is right. 'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to lose. And it's you and me and all of the people. And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you.”

7. Gold, Britt Nicole

Favorite Lyric – “So don't let anybody tell you that you're not loved. And don't let anybody tell you that you're not enough. Yeah there are days that we all feel like we're messed up, but the truth is that we're all diamonds in the rough. So don't be ashamed to wear your crown. You're a king; you're a queen inside and out. You glow like the moon, you shine like the stars. This is for you, wherever you are.”

6. Unbelievable, Thousand Foot Crutch

Favorite Lyric – “Like cowboys, we be rockin' the territory in this rap game, 'n' Christ blessed us with the octane. The same name who created the world in seven days will change ya life, you'd be amazed!”

5. God Gave Me You, Dave Barnes

I realize that Dave wrote this for his wife, but how he expresses himself is perfect and every single guy in high school needs to listen to this song. It is a great example for all men.

Favorite Lyric – “God gave me you for the ups and downs. God gave me you for the days of doubt. For when I think I've lost my way, there are no words here left to say, it's true. God gave me you.”

4. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall, Coldplay

Favorite Lyric – “I turn the music up, I got my records on. I shut the world outside until the lights come on. Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone. I feel my heart stop beating to my favorite song. And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night, until Monday morning feels another life. I turn the music up. I'm on a roll this time. And heaven is in sight.”

3. God’s Great Dance Floor, Chris Tomlin

Favorite Lyric – “You'll never stop loving us no matter how far we run. You'll never give up on us. All of heaven shouts, ‘let the future begin’. I feel alive, I come alive. I am alive on God's great dance floor.”

2. Tonight, Toby Mac

Favorite Lyric – “So let us seize this night, let us make our play. It’s on like the break of dawn, come what may.”

1. More Than Words, Extreme

I love this song so much! Showing love and saying “I love you” can be very different. Doing little things to make each other smile or remembering things that really matter to others is how to show love.

Favorite Lyric – “Saying I love you is not the words I want to hear from you. It's not that I want you not to say it, but if you only knew how easy it would be to show me how you feel. More than words is all you have to do to make it real. Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me, ‘cause I'd already know.”
