CD Review: tobyMac - Portable Sounds - Timothy Gerst - 2/22/2007

Artist: TobyMac
Album: Portable Sounds

Let’s get this party started – that’s how the first song on this album does it. From start to finish the album is able to provide both songs that hype up the atmosphere around the stereo, but also worship an Almighty Creator. This is the 3rd solo release from musical genius tobyMac and is holding true to form by providing catchy songs that will attract any long time fans while also drawing in new fans.

Starting out with the high energy song “One World” followed by the astoundingly potent worship song “Made to Love”, this album has it all. Continuing through the album you will find swift, powerful songs like “Boomin’” and “Ignition”, as well as more slowly paced worship songs like “I’m For You”.

Unlike preceding albums, guests are not as present on this album. In fact the only guest on this record is Mandisa. Regrettably Kevin Max and Michael Tait do not make an appearance this time around. This album also is more of a musical splendor as toby depends less on enhanced sound effects and more on pure musical talent.

Most importantly this album shows how fans can always continue to expect larger and greater things from the multitalented tobyMac. This album focuses more on relationships with God and how God relates to us and vice versa than previous albums. Overall this album is a must have for any music lover. Even if you are not fond of hip-hop, you will be able to find one song on the album to love.

Be sure to catch the live show that tobyMac puts on. The Portable Sounds Tour with tobyMac, Building 429, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Family Force 5 hits the States in March.
