Building 429. Three albums, three progressively different sounds. How much you appreciate their most recent project will depend on what it was that you appreciated about the first two, but Iris to Iris is undeniably the group’s most significant effort yet.
Learning that the CD’s compelling cover art is not the workmanship of a master graphic designer, but rather the Master Designer Himself, goes a long way in explaining the Building 429’s new tone. Looking at this cosmic phenomenon known as “The Eye of God”, it is no wonder that front man Jason Roy was inspired to pen not just one, but an entire album of songs acknowledging our Creator’s “Majesty”. Other thought-provoking lyrics recognize the “Power of [God’s] Name”, His “Incredible” and “Constant” nature, and the way He delights in and cares for His children. Album highlights include the dramatic production of “Taken”, the soul stirring piano of “Waiting to Shine”, from which the title is drawn, and the laidback update of a classic hymn on “Grace that is Greater”.
Building 429 virtually burst onto the CCM scene in 2004, receiving numerous honors for their debut, Space in Between Us. With a somewhat harder edge and lyrics full of encouragement for their increasing fan base, the group steered clear of the notorious sophomore slump with the release of their second album, Rise. After releasing Iris to Iris, some were quick to accuse the group of succumbing to the arguably overdone worship trend, although it is important to remember that the song with which they were launched into public awareness was the worship anthem “Glory Defined”. Others may believe that they have strayed too far from the feel of their first two albums. However, it seems to be not an attempt to conform or lack of direction, but rather a return to their roots, their hearts, their callings that motivates this album’s more vertical focus.
Fans will be pleased to hear that the Building 429 has not lost the sound for which they came to be known. Iris to Iris still delivers plenty of driving drum beats, soaring guitar solos, and Roy’s signature vocal stylings. But, more importantly, its lyrics convey a new maturity and communicate a fresh passion, inviting listeners to find themselves Iris to Iris with God Himself.
