Artist: Steven Curtis Chapman
Album: This Moment
Rating: 4 out of 5
On his latest CD, entitled,
This Moment
, Steven Curtis Chapman felt God called him to “Just write what you know.” On this, his sixteenth studio release, fans get a lot of what they’ve come to expect from Steven Curtis Chapman: a mixture of serious and catchy tunes about life, love, and family.
On this album, Steven encourages us to embrace the beauty of each moment in a world where everything seems to be in fast forward. This idea is expressed best in the track,
Miracle of the Moment
: “We are who and where and what we are for now. And this is the only moment we can do anything about. So breathe it in and breathe it out. Listen to your heartbeat. There's a wonder in the here and now.” The theme of the album is also found sprinkled throughout as in the song
Cinderella
, in which Chapman sings about the precious time spent between a father and his daughter. Musically, the album has a wide range of styles from ballads, to pop, to pop rock. Beyond the sure-fire hits mentioned above,
Something Crazy
is a solid, upbeat tune, in the vein of
Dive
, from the
Speechless
album.
There’s very little to take issue with here, but the song order does seem a bit off. While, I understand
Miracle of the Moment
being the first track because it introduces the album’s theme, it would have been nice to have some of the more upbeat numbers toward the beginning of the record. Songs like,
Something Crazy
,
Children of God
, and
You are Being Loved
should not be buried on the second half of
This Moment
. Beyond that complaint, this is perhaps Chapman’s best release since 2001’s
Declaration
. Chapman could win a few more Dove Awards with this release (as if we didn’t know that already).
