About Kevin Thompson
Songs From A Broken Planet-With the release of his second studio album in as many years singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Thompson offers a poignant blend of rock, gospel, and blues while venturing into new areas of songwriting and experimentation.
Much like his live performances, Songs From A Broken Planet is both emotionally charged and vulnerable. From the garage blues of Wolves At My Door to the whisper quiet, introspective, gospel of Nail Scarred Hands and Right By You to the anthematic When I Fall Kevin seamlessly blends songs about faith and love, brokenness and restoration into a highly accessible whole.
One of his strongest attributes is his ability to sound both fresh and familiar at the same time. He accomplishes this by embracing his musical roots and influences but refusing to be limited by them. Instead, Thompson uses his influences and a spirit of experimentation as a starting point and fine-tunes the initial creative spark into well-developed songs.
32 year old Kevin Thompson was born in Watertown NY. His father a pastor and accomplished musician started Kevin on the guitar on his 13th birthday. Kevin took to the instrument quickly and honed his chops playing with various musicians in the area.
Thompson said that his goal was to learn from everyone and every style possible. An approach he still practices: Some of my most valuable lessons came from players that were totally different from me. I still pick up things from other players. You have to be comfortable with your own playing to ask some kid that has only been playing for a year how he does this or that riff. I don't care where an idea comes from.
Although he played with several bands throughout his 20's he didn't begin singing and writing his own lyrics until he was 29. I think I finally gave myself permission to sing and write. A lot of musicians are afraid to step up to the mic. You can become comfortable and even complacent hiding behind an instrument. I wanted the freedom to write and record and the only way I could do that was by learning to sing he says.
In addition to writing, producing and performing his own music Kevin has recorded with a variety of artists. He has also composed original music for various media projects including a documentary for the CBC. Kevin's songs have also been covered by such bands as CCM artists One Foot Forward.
Kevin is currently performing both solo acoustic shows as well as performing with his backing band - The Broken Heroes. ... |
