The Proxy was formed a little over a year ago from 6 upstate NY musicians. We all come from diverse backgrounds, contrasting musical experiences and even different slants on our faith. Dan, the lead vocalist & lyricists, has been a youth pastor for 10 years and over those years has bumped into numerous crises and confusions people have as followers of Jesus. Most of the elements in the music are born out of those battles of the will and the forefronts of living out God’s kingdom agenda. The songwriting takes a journalistic approach to God-ward trust, authentic struggle, intense effort and real hope. The band began for two reasons; we just love music and we are urgent about speaking to those struggling in their pursuit of a deeper life. We know music’s power first hand. Bands like Audio Adrenaline, DC Talk and even U2 were spiritual soundtracks for us personally as teens. They compelled us to live out those truths we’d been apathetic with. We’re asking God to let our music do the same in helping people fight forward.
Musically we are in love with tension filled guitars, pure pop, atmospheric space and even orchestral arrangements. At this point we’ve self recorded and produced all our music. This has given us freedom to be us and shy away from comparisons. We hope our songs become innocently addictive but at times back you into a corner and invade your space. We are constantly straining to be accessible melodically but distracted enough to wonder where the song is going. The Proxy’s goal is to squeeze out the best music we can make and along the way stir up the soul of those listening. We are straining to keep our lives centered on what is good, noble and beautiful and let our music reflect that pursuit.
